Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic healing traditions for centuries as a folk remedy. It is a potent antioxidant with specific antiviral, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol lowering effects. Curcuminoids, the active ingredient in turmeric, benefits joints and other tissues by helping to neutralize free radicals.

In 2006 the University of Texas announced that preliminary research in lab studies of turmeric found it to be useful in preventing and blocking the growth of certain types of cancer such as breast cancer, melanoma tumor cells and other cells. Some researchers have found a relationship between lower rates of leukemia and colon cancer throughout populations that consume higher amounts of curcumin from turmeric.
