Sharaabi

For Rai Sahib Amar Nath Kapoor (Pran) the only important thing in the world is money. He was so busy in his business, that he could not spare a few minutes to fulfill his wife's last wish before dying. She leaves her child, Vicky (Amitabh Bachchan), in the lap of Mushiji, (Om Prakash) who is the childhood friend of Rai Sahib, but treated as a servant. Whenever Vicky disturbs the night parties or business meetings of Rai Sahib, he is given two spoons of brandy and put to intoxicating sleep. Missing the affectionate care of his mother and father, Vicky turns into a drunk at the age of 12. Vicky has regard only for the sympathetic Munshiji who has been more than a father and mother to him. A grown up Vicky starts restoring the hutment colonies of the poor and backwards. He also falls in love with a poor girl Meena, (Jaya Prada) who is a singer and dancer. But Rai Sahib disapproves of his son's soft corner for the poor. Vicky's falling in love with a poor girl cannot be digested by Rai Sahib. This conflict creates a wedge between father and son which is widened by the business rivals of Rai Sahib and by the Theatre organizer who would like to possess the theatre beauty Meena. Rai Sahib disinherits Vicky, forcing him to become homeless. Meena cannot escape the evil designs of the theatre organizer Natwar Shah (Ranjeet). Vicky couldn't sleep without drinking and that is why for one bottle of liquor Munshiji labors and loses his own life. Realizing Munshiji's sacrifices, Vicky promises not to ever drink again. Rai Sahib not being able to bear the loneliness, takes to suicidal drinking. He never knew that the scheming business partners were out to kill him. When Vicky comes to know of his father's plight and the evil designs of his partners what does he do? And when the wisdom dawns on Rai Sahib, could he change himself? See it unfolding on the screen in "Sharaabi."
